Everything in Moderation: Understanding THC and the Importance of Responsible Use

Dedicated to my friend, Phyllis, whose thoughtful question today inspired this article. Thank you for reminding us that learning begins with curiosity.

As a cannabis educator, one of the most important lessons I share is that cannabis is not simply about choosing the highest THC percentage. More is not always better.
THC offers many potential therapeutic benefits, including relief from pain, nausea, sleep difficulties, and loss of appetite.

However, research suggests that frequent use of high-dose, high-potency THC products may increase the risk of psychosis in some individuals, particularly those with a personal or family history of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.

Equally important is where your cannabis comes from. Source matters! I strongly recommend purchasing only from licensed, regulated producers that provide third-party laboratory testing.

Whenever possible, scan the QR code before purchasing. It should link to the product’s Certificate of Analysis (COA), allowing you to verify potency and review testing for contaminants such as pesticides, heavy metals, mold, yeast, bacteria, and residual solvents. An informed consumer is an empowered consumer.

Responsible cannabis use includes:
Choose products from trusted, licensed sources.
Scan the QR code and review the COA whenever possible.

Start with the lowest effective dose.
Increase slowly only if needed.
Consider balanced THC:CBD products.
Remember that higher THC does not always mean a better product.

Cannabis is a remarkable plant with tremendous therapeutic potential, but it should be approached with respect. The goal is not to consume the most THC possible—it’s to find the dose that provides the greatest benefit with the fewest unwanted effects.
Everything in moderation. Source matters.

A note from the author:  the California Cannabis Award winning strain for 2026 is Golden Bear, the thc is between 20%-22%!  Higher is NOT necessarily better.
